co·co·nut milk
noun.a milky white liquid expressed from coconut meat, used as a base in cooking.
Extracted by infusion with boiling water, coconut milk is used as a base and/or dairy alternative for a variety of dishes and drinks. The creamy texture is perfect for not only curries but smoothies, soups, and marinades as well!
Coconut Milk Versus Coconut Cream | How to Prep
The main difference between milk and cream is concentration and consistency.
- Coconut milk: Coconut milk has the consistency of cow's milk. Creamy but less concentrated - you are able to drink it. It is made from simmering one part shredded coconut in one part water.
- Coconut cream: Very rich, consistency is thick. It is made from simmering four parts shredded coconut in one part water. The cream that rises to the top of a can of coconut milk is also considered coconut cream.
Canned coconut milk and cream are ready to use! Simply add to dishes for a dairy-alternative with a creamy texture.
